Session #15 – 14 July 2017 – Theme: 1987 Hits

POPROCK - 1957-2017
60 Years of PopRock, 1957-2017, presented by Stephen Mitchell, on 5KIxFM Community Radio, Kingscote, Kangaroo Island http://www.5kixfm.xyz

I finally compiled a ‘Hit Songs of 1987’ playlist, and played them on air last Friday! Previously I have played songs written or released in the year of choice. But this time I went for major hits only. This way I could enjoy a full range of eclectic music!

It’s probable you know a song that I should have played. The 1980’s had millions of great songs that were hits – so I couldn’t include them all.

If you want me to play your favourite songs, leave a comment on this article or on twitter or the 5KIxFM facebook page – and I will play it next Friday morning!

In 1957 I played Little Richard, in 1967 the Carpenters, in 1977 the BeeGees. In 1987 Tiffany and Wang Chung were amongst the great hits of the year. Even Linda Rondstadt made it to the top 100!

Here are the songs I played. For want of another word, enjoy!

Session 12 – 16 June 2017 – Theme: Exercise

From my now-very-large-collection of music, I picked through them for anything that had ‘walk, run, dance’ and variations on the theme of exercise. None of them could actually be used during an exercise session, yet it was amazing to discover how many songs suggested exercise.

Session #8 – 5.May.2017 – Theme: 1967

POPROCK - 1957-2017
60 Years of PopRock, 1957-2017, presented by Stephen Mitchell, on 5KIxFM Community Radio, Kingscote, Kangaroo Island http://www.5kixfm.xyz

This was my pre-written script for this morning. I didn’t say it word-for-word, but I did try. Never a good idea.

Good morning to everyone on Kangaroo Island, in Adelaide, and around the world!

The 1960’s, as some may remember, had a lot of newcomer’s putting amazing vocals, guitar-riffs and diverse lyrics into their music. Yet SO many of these people were producing hit tunes that told us what the decade was going through, and how they hoped it all worked out.

Today I have collected music for only one year that decade – 1967. Two years before I was born, 1967 was the year many amazing songs were released. Baby-boomers (my parents generation!) would have had many of them on vinyl records and in their staple radio diet.

Enjoy my playlist. May it bring back memories of your youth, or make you want to sing along, or strum along on your air-guitar!

  • The Young Rascals – Groovin
  • Lulu – To Sir With Love
  • The Box Tops – The Letter
  • The Association – Windy
  • The Doors – Light My Fire
  • The Turtles – Happy Together

Happy now? Did that selection light your fire? Or was it too windy? Did you see what I did there? Maybe not. The FIRST SIX songs today were: (AS ABOVE). Now do you see what I did there. Never mind.

<station advert>. Let’s get groovy…

  • The Music Explosion – Little Bit O’ Soul
  • Tommy James & The Shondells – I Think We’re Alone Now
NOTE: Recognise that tune? Yes, Tiffany did an interesting rendition way back in 1987. I’ll save it for that collection!
  • Stevie Wonder – I Was Made To Love Her (Extended Version)
NOTE: Stevie was 16 when he recorded this. MoTown signed him when he was 11 years old!

The LAST FOUR songs were: (AS ABOVE) / <station advert>

  • Arthur Conley – Sweet Soul Music
  • The Soul Survivors – Expressway To Your Heart
  • The Rolling Stones – Ruby Tuesday
  • Buffalo Springfield – For What It’s Worth

The LAST FOUR songs were: (AS ABOVE). / <station advert>
Like listening to these hippy 60’s tunes? Then follow us on Facebook, leave a comment, and tell us where you are in the world. Because we all need…

  • Jefferson Airplane – Somebody To Love
  • Van Morrison – Brown Eyed Girl
  • The Happenings – I Got Rhythm
FYI: I asked on Facebook if anyone knew this 1977 version. Appeared not. But one friend got the tune stuck in her head for the rest of the day!)
  • Procol Harum – A Whiter Shade Of Pale
NOTE: “We skipped the light fandango, turned cartwheels ‘cross the floor” … Lyrics like this come once in a lifetime. Oh, The band name ‘Procol Harum’ was named after a breed of cat.
  • The Hollies – On A Carousel
  • The 5th Dimension – Up, Up And Away
Q: Who can remember which Australian airline used this song in their television advertising?
A: TAA, a long gone Australian airline that I remember flying on in my youth. Listen here

<NEWS AND WEATHER> / LAST SIX songs were: (AS ABOVE) / <station advert>

  • The Cowsills – The Rain, The Park & Other Things
  • The Buckinghams – Mercy, Mercy, Mercy
  • The Seekers – Georgy Girl
  • The Monkees – A Little Bit Me, a Little Bit You
  • The Spencer Davis Group – Gimme Some Lovin’

Wow, you know we are getting old when Georgy Girl is now fifty years old!
The LAST FOUR songs were: (AS ABOVE) / <station advert>

  • The Grass Roots – Let’s Live For Today
  • Booker T & The MG’s – Groovin’
NOTE: Recognise the tune? Yep, this was the first song in my playlist today, by The Young Rascals. Sounds a lot different without any lyrics!
  • Wilson Pickett – Funky Broadway
  • Jefferson Airplane – White Rabbit

The LAST FOUR songs were: (AS ABOVE) / <station advert>

  • Sonny and Cher – The Beat Goes On
  • Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell – Ain’t No Mountain High Enough
  • Peter Paul & Mary — I Dig Rock And Roll Music
  • The Five Americans – Western Union

I had no more songs in my playlist after this, my timing was out by 10minutes. No matter, I winged it from here … and it worked out perfectly!
